What is Pilates?
Pilates is a physical exercise method developed by Joseph Pilates at the beginning of the 20th century. Born in Germany in 1883, Joseph Pilates was passionate about fitness, health and well-being. He designed the Pilates method in the 1920s by combining elements of yoga, gymnastics, dance and boxing, along with breathing and body stabilisation principles.
Originally called “Contrology”, the method emphasised the idea of total control of body, mind and movement. Joseph Pilates developed these exercises to help injured soldiers during World War I recover and strengthen their bodies.
